Case Study of Unilever

Case details

Our Client is the Sri Lankan entity of a large multinational FMCG firm, with more than LKR 40Bn annual turnover. It owns closer to 50 brands which have been very popular in every Sri Lankan household for decades.

As a part of a large multinational, our client was governed by very strict data protection policies. Implementation of a BI platform was not very convenient due to the top down approach of solution implementation. All the data was extracted in the form of excel or CSV reports with no direct access to system databases.

Most of the reporting used to take place using MS excel and Power point as tools. This was time consuming, and prone to human errors. The insights that were obtained in this manner was not sufficient and was not a reflective of 360-degree view of the business.

Zkewed was engaged by the Finance Director and Head of IT to transform the way they visualize data.

Zkewed developed an initial prototype of a dashboard using an existing CSV report of data they extract from the system using Microsoft Power BI. The data model was optimized to make sure there was no need of manipulating the source data formats.

Once the prototype was presented, Zkewed obtained a scope of work from the finance team. The scope was 3 minimum viable products, which consisted of specific formats and parameters they would like to see in their Power BI report.

The project was implemented on Agile method, where Zkewed pre-agreed a weekly deliverable. At the end of each week Zkewed would meet the project stakeholders and review work. The meeting was the place to discuss, freeze the outcome or suggest further improvements.

End Outcome

The outcome of the effort was a fully automated report on Microsoft Power BI, which gives the perfect insights to Finance decision makers,

  • If the company is growing?
  • If the company is growing profitably?
  • If the company is meeting its objectives and targets

Financially, across all brands and product categories. The report was equipped with drill down capabilities where the category specialists can dig deep into the same report with few clicks without expecting a new report for such purpose.

Zkewed team also optimized the data source, by converting the CSV data into a database, which is internally hosted. This minimized data loading delays and issues in data cleansing.

The reporting burden of the team was transformed from

  1. Extracting CSV data
  2. Cleansing and Formatting
  3. Creating reports
  4. Proof reading
  5. Presenting data
  6. Follow up report requests

To Now

  1. Extracting CSV data and saving on a shared folder
  2. Interpretation and presenting information

Which is essentially enhancement of their scope of work, whilst reducing routine operational work load.

User Migration

Implementation of the platform and developing the reports was only the tip of the ice berg. Zkewed team worked seriously on user migration to make sure the new reporting practice will be a sustainable one.

This was done via a hands-on class room training and followed up by a two weeks of on-site help desk where Zkewed assisted the client team members to develop their own reports/ and involved in co-developing more complex ones. The team was also encouraged to raise any questions regarding report developments to Zkewed team.
